GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- A Grand Rapids man, Matthew Wilson, 56, faces charges for allegedly producing over $30,000 in counterfeit currency across 14 states. Michigan State Police (MSP) arrested Wilson following a five-month investigation that began in October 2025. The investigation was initiated after reports of fake $10 bills surfaced at a Dollar General store in Benzie County.

Authorities identified Wilson as a suspect through extensive coordination with local, state, federal, and out-of-state law enforcement agencies. On March 27, the MSP Sixth District Fugitive Team located Wilson at a hotel near the Grand Rapids airport. During the search of the hotel room, officers discovered additional counterfeit money, a fraudulent check, electronic devices, and a printer with materials for producing counterfeit bills.

Wilson was arraigned on April 6 in Benzie County District Court on five counts of uttering and publishing counterfeit bills, each carrying a potential five-year prison sentence and a $2,500 fine. His bond was set at $250,000 cash/surety, and he is scheduled to appear in court again on April 20.

Wilson is also expected to face charges in other states, including Iowa and North Dakota, where extraditable felony warrants have been issued. Investigators believe Wilson has committed similar offenses in more than a dozen states.
