GRAND RAPIDS (WOOD-AM) - The second-degree murder trial of former Grand Rapids police officer Christopher Schurr starts today in Kent County Circuit Court.
It's expected to last up to two weeks.
Protesters were seen in Grand Rapids over the weekend.
Patrick Lyoya died during a struggle after a traffic stop in April 2022.
Schurr shot Lyoya in the back of the head while both were on the ground in a yard.
Schurr's legal team says the use of force was justified and that Schurr was defending himself.
