Jury seated for second-degree murder trial of ex-GRPD officer Schurr

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- A 14-person jury consisting of four men and 10 women will listen to opening statements Monday when the trial of former Grand Rapids Police Officer Christopher Schurr is scheduled to begin.

Two of them are alternates. They were seated Wednesday morning in Kent County Circuit Court.

WOOD-TV reports the jury includes a nurse, a janitor, a retired code enforcement officer and a retired bank teller, among others.

Schurr is charged with second-degree murder, but his attorney says he shot Patrick Lyoya in the head in self-defense while the two struggled on the ground after a traffic stop on Nelson Avenue near Griggs Street. Lyoya ran from the scene and grabbed for Schurr's Taser before they scuffled on the ground. That was on April 4, 2022.

Lyoya was a 26-year-old native of the Congo.
