Arson suspect charged for allegedly shooting home, vehicles in Montcalm Co.

MONTCALM COUNTY, Mich. -- The Montcalm County Sheriff's Office says a man suspected of shooting a home and some vehicles on February 28 has been arraigned on multiple charges.

The shots came from a passing car around 2 a.m. on Johnson Road in Montcalm Township.

Deputies executed a warrant Wednesday to enter the suspect's home on Vining Road in Greenville. They say 30-year-old Dalton D. O'Green wasn't home at the time, but they confiscated some evidence that may link him to the Johnson Road incident.

Police say an off-duty deputy spotted O'Green's home on fire the next morning and Michigan State Police began an arson investigation. An Ionia County tactical team later took him into custody at a home in Fairplain Township.

Here are some specifics gleaned from a Montcalm County Sheriff's Office news release:

A possible suspect was identified at the time and attempts to locate him were unsuccessful.

The investigation progressed and on the evening of Wednesday, March 5, 2025, the deputies executed a warrant to enter the suspect’s home on Vining Road in Montcalm Township. He was not located, but evidence was discovered and seized that is believed to link him to the Johnson Road incident.

Early in the morning of March 6, 2025, an off-duty deputy was near the suspect’s home and found it burning. Several fire departments responded to extinguish the blaze, and the Michigan State Police began an arson investigation. The suspect was believed to have fled the home.

An extensive search by the Sheriff’s Office and the Michigan State Police was conducted and the suspect’s vehicle was located at a home on Holland Road in Fairplain Township. An arrest warrant for the suspect and a search warrant for the home were obtained. The Ionia County Critical Incident Team was asked to assist with the high-risk entry into the home. The suspect emerged from the home and was taken into custody without incident. Additional evidence was also discovered that is believed to be related to the Johnson Road incident.

The man, 30-year-old Dalton D. O’Green from Greenville, was lodged in the County Jail and has been charged with Discharging a Firearm at a Building, Malicious Destruction of Property Over $1,000.00, Assault with a Dangerous Weapon, and Felony Firearm. He has been arraigned on felony charges and is being held on a $500,000.00 bond.

During the incident, there was no threat to the public as the man’s aggression was directed at specific targets.

The investigations are ongoing. No one was injured during any of the crimes or when the suspect was taken into custody.

In addition to the Sheriff’s Office, Michigan State Police and the Ionia County Critical Incident Team, Montcalm County Central Dispatch, Montcalm Township Fire Department, Lakeview Area Fire Department, Stanton Area Fire Department, Spencer Township Fire Department, Montcalm County Emergency Medical Services, and Newaygo County Emergency Response Team assisted with the investigation.
