Work on Fruit Ridge Avenue bridge in Walker to start this spring

WALKER (WOOD-AM) - Work will start this spring on the replacement of the Fruit Ridge Avenue bridge over Interstate 96 in Walker.

Michigan Department of Transportation spokesperson John Richard tells WOOD-TV the new bridge will feature five lanes, pedestrian and cycling lanes and connections to regional trails.

"You'll have connections to the Musketawa Trail, the Fred Meijer White Pine Trail, access to Kenowa Hills High School," Richard said. "This will be a huge addition to the whole system."

"We're running into problems with people that are bicycling across the bridge, people walking to access the bus system," Scott Conners, the city engineer for Walker, said. "There are even stories of somebody in a wheelchair trying to cross it during rush hour."

State lawmakers set aside $25 million for the project two years ago.
