DHD#10 announces new COVID-19 booster recommendations

WEST MICHIGAN -- The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and District Health Department #10 (DHD#10) have announced updated COVID-19 vaccine recommendations.

District Health Department #10 is the largest geographic health department in Michigan, serving ten counties including Crawford, Kalkaska, Lake, Manistee, Mason, Mecosta, Missaukee, Newaygo, Oceana, and Wexford.

The CDS and DHD#10 say people who are 65 or older and those aged 6 months through 64 years with moderate or severe immunocompromise are now advised to receive a second 2024-2025 COVID-19 vaccine dose at least 6 months after their last dose.

Here is more from a DHD#10 news release:

“Getting approval for updated or additional vaccines will greatly help reduce the spread of COVID-19, as well as reduce symptom severity,” said DHD#10 Clinical Supervisor Bethanie Dean. “Following the correct vaccine schedule is important, so be sure to talk to your healthcare provider or local health department to determine the appropriate COVID-19 dose for you.”

New COVID-19 Booster Guidance:

  • Individuals aged 65 years or older who were vaccinated under the routine schedule should receive two doses of any 2024-2025 COVID-19 vaccine, separated by at least 6 months, regardless of prior vaccination history.
    • Unvaccinated individuals who start vaccination with the 2024-2025 Novavax COVID-19 vaccine should receive two doses of Novavax, followed by a third dose of any COVID-19 vaccine 6 months later.
  • Individuals aged 6 months or older who are moderately or severely immunocompromised should receive:
    • If unvaccinated: A multidose initial series with an age-appropriate COVID-19 vaccine, followed by one additional dose 6 months later (minimum interval: two months). Additional doses may be considered under shared clinical decision-making.
    • If previously vaccinated with a multidose initial series: Two additional age-appropriate doses of the 2024-2025 COVID-19 vaccine, 6 months apart (minimum interval: 2 months). Additional doses may be considered under shared clinical decision-making.
