NORTON SHORES, Mich. -- A firefighter has come away with no injuries after falling through the second floor to the main floor while fighting a house fire.
Norton Shores firefighters said they and crews from the Muskegon and Muskegon Heights fire departments responded around 7:15 Friday morning to the two-story house fire in the 2000 block of Seminole Road at McCracken Street. They say no one was home at the time.
The Norton Shores Fire Department reported at 10:50 a.m. that the fire was out.
Also responding to the fire were Trinity Health EMS, Norton Shores Police Department, Consumers Energy, DTE, and Canteen 450.
It issued a statement in a news release:
During operations, one firefighter fell through the second floor to the main floor. Fortunately, the firefighter was able to self-extricate, was evaluated on scene with no injuries, and returned to work after.
The fire is out, and all fire units have cleared the scene. While the cause of the fire remains under investigation, initial findings suggest it may have been due to the improper disposal of polyurethane staining materials.
Rags, brushes, and other materials soaked in oil-based stains can spontaneously combust if not handled correctly. Additional resources were requested from Fruitport and Ferrysburg Fire Department to maintain emergency response readiness in the community.
