Prosecutor files Safe Storage charge against man after toddler shot in GR

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- Kent County Prosecutor Chris Becker says his office has filed a charge of Safe Storage Violation against a Grand Rapids man after a toddler was shot inside a home last Saturday.

Darius Charles Guy is the man being accused. Kent County Corrections records indicate he is 23 years old and was booked into jail on January 24th.

Police believe the 3-year-old accidentally shot herself or himself at the home on Sinclair Avenue, west of College Avenue. The child is recovering from serious injuries at a hospital. Becker says the failure to safely store a gun with a minor around is a felony that carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and up to 75-hundred dollars in fines.

There is no word yet when the arraignment will be.

Michigan's Safe Storage Law took effect last year. It requires that unattended guns be kept unloaded and locked with a locking device or in a container when a child is likely to be present.
