Walker Mayor discusses launch of new podcast series

WALKER, Mich. -- The City of Walker has launched a biweekly podcast series that features interviews with decision-makers, updates on local projects and spotlights on community stories.

New episodes of the 'Made in Walker' podcast are being released on the 1st and 3rd Mondays of every month.

Walker Mayor Garey Carey Jr. and the city's public relations specialist, Nicole DiDonato, visited the WOOD Radio studios Monday morning to discuss it.

"The reason we wanted to do it? We felt social media at this point is at this maturity phase, and there's other ways to communicate and engage with our community," Carey said on West Michigan's Morning News.

The City of Walker was one of the first local communities to implement live streaming of its commission meetings. The timing for the podcasts is good, because there are a lot of activities taking place in the city right now.

"Construction projects, new curriculums, Mayor's Youth Academy, the NextGen Academy for adults," Carey said.

He added that Walker city officials are trying to be as transparent as possible, "And this is just another way to maybe take another step there to get some things out there."

The first episode was titled, "Building a Connected and Thriving Community: Insights from Walker's Mayor Gary Carey." The second one that was released Monday, January 20, is titled, "Fruit Ridge Bridge Replacement Preview."

That project entails relieving traffic congestion.
