WALKER, Mich. -- Michigan State Police say no serious injuries resulted from a 15-vehicle pileup on eastbound I-96 near the Alpine Avenue exit around 10:20 a.m. Monday.
But one of the two semi-trucks involved ended up on its side. The freeway was closed for a couple hours, and that caused big traffic backups.
It was one of several traffic crashes reported from late Sunday through Monday afternoon on West Michigan roadways.
Walker Police said a 73-year-old Newaygo man was seriously injured in a 10:43 p.m. crash Sunday on Wilson Avenue at Hall Street. They notified WOOD Radio that a semi-truck driver was attempting to back into a private drive when a pickup truck slammed into the semi's trailer. The pickup driver was seriously injured.
Police said he had to be pulled out of the wreckage by the Walker Fire Department. The semi truck driver from Minnesota was not hurt. No names were released as of the time of publication.
The investigation continues, but police say they do not believe alcohol or speeding were factors in the crash.
The Ottawa County Central Dispatch was reporting more than a dozen active crashes at one point Monday afternoon, including a Jeep into a guardrail along the westbound M-104 off-ramp to Ferrysburg and car into a tree in Jamestown Township. No injuries were reported in that crash along Quincy Street at 16th Avenue. Dispatchers said a plow truck and an SUV collided on 64th Avenue south of Street in Polkton Township (near Coopersville) around 2:48 p.m. Monday. No injuries were reported.
State Police and Grand Rapids Police handled several slideoffs and crashes on other major roadways. One of them was on eastbound I-196 (the Gerald R. Ford Freeway) near the Ottawa Avenue exit in downtown G.R.
