Kent County deputies take man into custody after shots fired in Gaines Twp.

GAINES CHARTER TOWNSHIP, Mich. -- A 34-year-old man is in custody after several gunshots were fired inside a home in Gaines Township on Tuesday.

It happened around 12:10 a.m. on Fresno Circle, which is south of 60th Street and west of Eastern Avenue. That is just south of the City of Kentwood.

Kent County Undersheriff Bryan Muir said police twice received calls about a disturbance there.

“One, we initially received a call of family trouble in the 600 block of Fresno; and then shortly after that, as our deputies were still responding, we received calls about the gunfire,” he said.

No one was hurt, including two young children who were inside the home at the time. But neighbors living just to the west of the Woodfield Apartments were alarmed. Some bullets struck nearby homes.

“I can’t talk about how many shots were fired in this incident. But I can say that we received multiple calls from 911 from neighbors in the area, stating that there were several sounds of gunfire,” Muir said.

He told WOOD Radio the domestic incident stemmed from a family argument between the man and a 30-year-old woman. She ran from the home when the violence broke out.

At the time of this report, the Kent County Prosecutor’s Office was reviewing a police report on the incident before deciding on potential charges.

No names had been released yet.

The KCSO released a written statement that read, in part, "The Kent County Sheriff's Office understands the distress such incidents can cause within the community and is committed to the safety and well-being of residents.

"We appreciate the quick thinking of neighbors who reported the gunfire, which allowed deputies to respond swiftly and prevent further harm."
