Mel Trotter's "Code Blue" coat drive extended

GRAND RAPIDS (WOOD-AM) - Mel Trotter Ministries is extending its annual coat drive for another month.

Organizers say donations have fallen short of goals.

The ministry was hoping to collect 250 coats, but are said to be short by about 20 or 30.

The "Code Blue" Drive places blue barrels at more than 40 businesses. New and gently-used winter gear is being accepted.

"We have guests who don't stay in the shelter for various reasons, but they still need to be kept warm," Matthew Grzybowski, Mel Trotter's advancement operations manager, told WOOD-TV.

The organization is also requesting men's jeans, winter boots, sweatpants, sweatshirts, hats, gloves and other winter accessories.
