Salvation Army in Kent County seeks donations to meet fundraising goal

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- The Salvation Army in Kent County says it is in urgent need of community support to meet its Christmas campaign fundraising goal.

As of Monday, Dec. 30, it had reached only 64 percent of its $1.4 million campaign goal. More than $125,000 in matching funds remain available, so donations made through today will be doubled. They can be given in person at the Salvation Army office at 1215 East Fulton Street in Grand Rapids, or through the website SAKentCounty.org .

How to Give:

  • Visit SAKentCounty.org
  • Call 616-459-3433
  • Or donate in person at 1215 Fulton St. E, Grand Rapids, MI 49503

The Salvation Army provided more information in a news release. Here is some of it:

The Salvation Army encourages donors to take advantage of year-end tax-incentive giving options such as IRAs, Donor Advised Funds, and gifts of stock to make a lasting difference.

As part of their 2024 Christmas assistance program, The Salvation Army saw a 20% in those seeking assistance, providing more than 4,500 needy children with gifts, and a nutritious holiday meal for over 2,000 households. While the organization is most visible at Christmas, they also operate numerous programs that help Kent County residents in need year-round.

Those programs include:

  • An emergency food pantry
  • Housing and Utilities assistance
  • One of the county’s largest seniors’ programs, which has been assessed and approved by the Area Agency on Aging of West Michigan
  • Pathway of Hope program which helps families break the cycle of generational poverty.
  • And programs to help individuals with substance abuse.

“We are grateful for the generosity of our donors so far,” said Major Tim Meyer, Divisional Secretary for the Grand Valley Area Command. “However, we still have work to do to ensure we can continue to provide critical services to those in need. Every dollar makes a difference, and this is the perfect time to maximize the impact of your giving.”
