Former GRPD officer heading to trial in April on murder charge

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- Former Grand Rapids Police Officer Christopher Schurr will stand trial three years to the month after he fatally shot a motorist in the head during a traffic stop.

Kent County Circuit Court has set an April 21 trial date on a second-degree murder charge. That is when jury selection will begin. Opening statements will begin April 28. Patrick Lyoya was pulled over in April of 2022 on Nelson Avenue north of Griggs Street in southeast Grand Rapids because the car's license plate didn't match the vehicle.

After getting out of the car and being asked by Schurr to show his driver's license, the 26-year-old Lyoya took off running.

Schurr, 31, chased him down, and then Lyoya reached for his Taser, and they got into a wrestling match on the ground. Schurr was on top of Lyoya and then fatally shot him in the dead. It was all captured on camera.

Last week, the Michigan Supreme Court dismissed an appeal by Schurr to dismiss the case. Kent County Prosecuting Attorney Christopher Becker told WOOD Radio on Dec. 2 that they hoped the trial would proceed "as quickly as possible to have a final resolution for Patrick’s family who has been patiently waiting for years for this to occur."
