East Grand Rapids names Ric Buikema next Public Safety Director

The East Grand Rapids City Commission is appointing acting public safety director Ric Buikema to the position permanently.

Buikema took over the role in March after Mark Herald retired from the role.

The city commission began a search for Herald's replacement that same month, but decided to promote Buikema.

He has served as a member of the East Grand Rapids Public Safety Department for 27 years.

"I am honored to be appointed director of the East Grand Rapids Public Safety Department and use my experience to lead our team of cross-trained police, fire and emergency medical service professionals," Buikema said. "I thank City staff, City Commission and community members for their support in allowing me the opportunity to further server them in providing transparent, professional and dedicated service."

He was sworn in at a meeting on Monday.
