Fourth District Congressman Bill Huizenga calls for post-election civility

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- Fourth District Michigan Congressman Bill Huizenga says Tuesday's dominant election victory by President-elect Donald Trump and some other Republican leaders has sent a strong political statement.

And he hopes part of that statement is the need for some post-election civility. So, the Zeeland-area Republican was pleased to receive a congratulatory call from his Democratic opponent, whom he defeated the other day.

"I just want to say thanks to my opponent, Jessica Swartz, who was kind enough to give me a call yesterday," Huizenga said on West Michigan's Morning News.

U.S. Taxpayers Party candidate Curtis Clark also competed for the 4th District seat.

U.S. Rep. Huizenga gave his thoughts on what the outcome of the election signifies.

"I think it is a repudiation, it's a statement about the country's view of the direction of the country and what has been going on in the last couple of years. Now, the trick will be how do we maintain that momentum and don't come off the rails?" Huizenga said.

Huizenga, 55, first took office in 2003, as a state representative for Michigan's 90th House District. He won re-election twice after that, in 2004 and 2006, and later served six terms as 2nd District Congressman. Following the 2020 U.S. Census, several counties in Michigan were redistricted; the boundary lines for several districts were redrawn.

The district Huizenga represented was pushed further to the south. The only portion of the old Second Congressional District that is in the current Fourth District is the lower half of Ottawa County.

The 4th District includes all of Allegan and Van Buren counties, and parts of Ottawa, Kalamazoo, Calhoun and Berrien counties.
