Christkindl Markt doubling number of vendors for this year's festival

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- More than 250,000 people attended the inaugural Christkindl Market last year at the Grand Rapids Downtown Market.

Christkindl serves as a Christmas village lined with artisan gift and food vendors, plus live holiday entertainment. This year's event will run November 15 through December 23, with more than 60 outdoor vendors.

"This year, we've pretty much doubled in size: doubled the vendors, doubled the activities," Christkindl General Manager Karen Carpenter told WOOD Radio.

There are various Christmas-themed activities and items outdoors in the parking lot for the Christkindl festival, and also inside the Grand Rapids Downtown Market itself, at 435 Ionia Ave SW, south of Wealthy Street.

"We have 60 vendors (this year); last year we have 30 vendors," Carpenter said. "We have four curling sheets instead of two curling sheets. Wonderful alpenglobes to reserve and enjoy some fun time with family and friends. Then, also, our commemorative glassware. Bars with alcoholic beverages as well as non-alcoholic beverages."

There is no charge to enter the Christkindl Market and the Downtown Market.

Carpenter said Christkindl will run 28 days this year, one more than last year's first festival.

"If you would like to plan your visit, we do have a guide on our website ... it gives you a little inside scoop as to the best places to park, those kinds of things."
