Train crashes into pickup truck stuck on railroad tracks in Ionia County

CAMPBELL TOWNSHIP, Mich. -- The Michigan State Police and Ionia County Sheriff's Office are investigating after a CSX train crashed into a stuck pickup truck on railroad tracks.

It occurred around 10:30 Wednesday night, near Jackson and West Bippley roads in Campbell Township. Sheriff's Lieutenant Jack Pieters tells WOOD Radio the 39-year-old driver of the pickup had been using the tracks as a shortcut when his vehicle became stuck about a half-mile from the roadway.

"He was already outside the vehicle; he was not in the vehicle at the time of the crash," said Lt. Pieters, who added that the local man had been using the railroad tracks as a shortcut when his car became stuck.

"He had been consuming alcohol and admitted so," Pieters said.

The sheriff's office is handling the Operating While Intoxicated portion of the investigation. State Police are looking into the crash itself.
