GRAND RAPIDS (WOOD-AM) - A Senate bill introduced by Debbie Stabenow and Gary Peters would give federal recognition to the Grand River Bands of Ottawa Indians.

The tribe is recognized by the state, but not the Department of the Interior.

They do not receive federal benefits or access to federal programs.

Membership has dwindled down to around 500 members who mostly live in Kent, Muskegon and Oceana counties.
