KCSO deputies arrest two suspects, round up gun & drugs in Gaines Twp.

GAINES CHARTER TOWNSHIP, Mich. -- Kent County Sheriff's deputies say they confiscated a loaded Glock pistol, a lot of cash, plus marijuana and packaging materials after a traffic stop in Gaines Township over the weekend.

It happened 4 p.m. Saturday on Division Avenue at Green Meadow Street. That is north of M-6 in the Cutlerville area of the township.

Sgt. Kailey Gilbert told WOOD Radio a deputy tried to initiate a traffic stop after observing the vehicle make some "abnormal movements."

But it took a while for the vehicle to pull over. Some additional deputies arrived to assist the officer who was already there, and placed spike strips under the rear passenger tire just before the vehicle sped off.

After a brief chase, it stopped the driver took off running. Deputies say they caught the 23-year-old man and also took the 20-year-old woman passenger into custody.

Their names had not been released pending formal charges.

Police say they later found inside the vehicle significant amounts of marijuana, a scale, packaging materials, a large sum of cash, and a loaded Glock 10mm pistol.

Gilbert explained why the marijuana possession is illegal.

"Even though it's still legal from a dispensary, you can't be dealing it on the street. And this amount that was in the vehicle was well over the legal amount," she said.

The Kent County Sheriff's Office said in a news release that it remains committed to investigating criminal activity and ensuring the community's safety.
