Ottawa County commissioners reject grant, approve FY budget

OLIVE TOWNSHIP (WOOD-AM) - Commissioners in Ottawa County have rejected a $900,000 state health grant, opting instead to send the money back to Lansing.

In a 6-4 vote, the board rejected the infection prevention grant.

"I don’t think that we need to pre-plan to spend $900,000 on communicable diseases and COVID," Chairman Joe Moss said.

Commissioner Allison Miedema argued that declining the funds would be fiscally responsible.

"If we actually turned it down, we're actually saving tax-payer dollars - keeping it in their own pockets over time," Miedema said.

The board also voted to approve the next fiscal year's budget.
