GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- NBC News Radio national correspondent Rory O'Neill says some large retail companies are concerned about how the upcoming election might impact holiday sales this year.
O'Neill was a guest on West Michigan's Morning News.
"(They're) concerned that, if it takes days and days and days for a winner to be declared that could be days and days where we throw a wet blanket on retails sales. That, perhaps we're all home on our couches watching the news, and not out at the mall," O'Neill said.
So, the retailers are moving up the dates for when they will be offering the bigger discounts ahead of the holiday shopping season.
He also pointed out that Thanksgiving is on November 28th this year, compared to November 23rd last year ... meaning there will be five fewer shopping days between Black Friday and Christmas.
"So, we are really going to see things early. We're already seeing it, right? If you go to Cosco, the Christmas trees are up - some of them. But as the Halloween decorations sell out and as the candy is sold out, it's all getting replaced with Christmas," O'Neill said.
