GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- The Grand Rapids Police say a 24-year-old woman has been booked on a felony murder charge following the death of her one-year-old daughter last Thursday.
Officers responded to a home on Eastern Avenue south of Wealthy Street and found the 19-month-old girl beyond help and her twin brother in life-threatening condition.
Police say the preliminary investigation indicates abuse and extreme neglect. An autopsy determined the cause of death was homicide. They say Brooklynne Davis will be formally charged with felony murder and first-degree child abuse.
“This is one of the most horrific cases of child abuse I have ever seen,” said Chief Eric Winstrom. “Neither the first responders, or the detectives who worked tirelessly for justice, will ever forget this child. We are praying for the recovery of her twin brother who also suffered unconscionable abuse.”
According to the GRPD, the preliminary investigation identified signs of abuse and extreme neglect. Major Case Team and Family Services Team investigators were called in, as well as Child Protective Services (CPS).
Police say an eight-year-old in the home did not appear to have any immediate medical needs; however, CPS took custody of the child due to the conditions in the home.
