Residents escape early morning apartment building fire in Holland

HOLLAND, Mich. -- Holland Public Safety says no one was hurt in an early morning apartment fire Tuesday at 371 West 19th Street, which is between Cleveland and Harrison avenues.

Firefighters arrived at the two-story, two-unit building to find smoke pouring out of the second-floor windows around 12:40 a.m.

"Presented with poor conditions and heavy smoke they made entry to the second-floor apartment to extinguish the fire and search for potential occupants," Holland DPS said in a news release.

They brought the fire under control quickly and confirmed that all of the residents had gotten out safely.

Crews remained on the scene until 3:30 a.m., putting out hot spots and working to salvage the first-floor apartment. The second story suffered significant damage, including the roof.

There is no word yet how it started.

"However, the department's Fire Marshal has initiated a cause and origin investigation," Holland DPS said in the news release.

It added that damage estimates were not immediately available.

The Holland fire department was assisted by Holland police officers and paramedics from American Medical Response. Holland Charter Township provided assistance and responded to the scene through automatic mutual aid. The Graafschap Fire Department provided standby coverage for subsequent incidents in the city for the duration of the incident, DPS said.
