Police report multiple, separate fatal auto crashes since Sunday night

WEST MICHIGAN -- The Montcalm County Sheriff's Office says a 60-year-old Greenville man on a moped was struck and killed around 9:15 Sunday night in Montcalm Township.

It was one of several crashes on various roads in the region.

The Montcalm Township location was South Greenville Road (M-91) near Westover Driver. Deputies say the moped rear-ended a disabled S-U-V on the shoulder of the road. A witness reported that a southbound vehicle was overtaking the moped, which caused the moped to move into the shoulder area of the roadway just prior to the crash. The southbound vehicle left the scene. More details from the Montcalm County Sheriff's Office are posted at the bottom of this page.

Elsewhere, Kent County Sheriff's investigators said speeding was a factor in a separate, two-car crash around 8 o'clock Monday morning in Spencer Township. They say a 19-year-old Greenville man was driving a sports car when he tried to pass a vehicle in a no-passing lane on 19 Mile Road. As it crested a small hill it collided with a vehicle driven by a man from Battle Creek. Police say the Greenville man died, while his passenger and the other driver suffered minor injuries.

In a separate crash in Courtland Township, Michigan State Police are investigating a crash that happened this morning between a Kent County Sheriff's Office cruiser and an S-U-V. It was around 11 o'clock on Meyers Lake Avenue near 14 Mile Road. The Sheriff's Office said the deputy was responding to a medical emergency and the lights and sirens were activated on the marked cruiser at the time of the crash. The cruiser rolled onto its side. Police are reporting no serious injuries.

Regarding a fatal crash last week, Grand Rapids Police have identified the 18-year-old woman who died Friday when her S-U-V went off Breton Road and slammed into a tree. That was around 12:40 a.m. along Breton Road south of 28th Street. Police say Brooklyn Botello was the woman who died. A man who was a passenger in the vehicle was taken to a hospital with critical injuries. Police figure speed played a role in that crash.

Here are more details from a Montcalm County Sheriff's Office news release:

The investigation revealed that a 2024 Yongfu moped was traveling south on Greenville Road when it rear-ended a 2009 Chevy Traverse that was disabled, parked, and unattended on the shoulder of the roadway outside the fog line. A witness reported that a southbound vehicle was overtaking the moped which caused the moped to move into the shoulder area of the roadway just prior to the crash. The southbound vehicle left the scene, and the witness was not able to describe the vehicle.

The moped driver, a 60-year-old Greenville man, was pronounced dead at the scene. Alcohol was not believed to be a factor, and the driver was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. The crash remains under investigation. Greenville Road between Peck Road and Holland Lake Road was shut down during the investigation.

The Sheriff’s Office was assisted by Montcalm County Central Dispatch, Montcalm County Emergency Services, and the Montcalm Township Fire Department.

Anyone with information regarding this crash is encouraged to contact the Sheriff’s Office as the investigation is ongoing.
