Car collides with dump truck in Ottawa County, eight people injured

BLENDON TOWNSHIP, Mich. -- The Ottawa County Sheriff's Office says eight people were injured in a two-vehicle crash Tuesday morning in Blendon Township.

It happened around 11:20 a.m. at Tyler Street and 72nd Avenue.

Sheriff's deputies say a car and a dump truck collided in the intersection after the car pulled into the path of the truck. Two adults in their 60s and five children were injured. All of them were taken to a hospital, with two of the children suffering critical injuries. The others were in stable condition.

Police say the driver of the dump truck suffered an arm injury and also went to the hospital.

Here are more details from an OCSO news release:

Blendon Township Fire was also alerted to the crash and upon arrival summoned assistance from Allendale and Georgetown Township Fire departments. Three EMS providers also responded to the scene: AMR, LIFE EMS, and Trinity Health EMS from Grand Haven.

Preliminary investigation at the scene, supported by witness accounts and video evidence, showed that vehicle #1, a passenger vehicle with 7 occupants was eastbound on Tyler Street. The driver stopped at the stop sign for 72nd Avenue and then started up directly into the path of #2 which was south bound on 72nd. The driver of that vehicle, a commercial dump truck, struck vehicle #1. Both vehicles came to rest in a cornfield on the east side of 72nd. 72nd Avenue does not have a stop sign for north and southbound traffic at this intersection. Due to the nature of this crash, the Ottawa County Traffic Services Unit assisted by the OCSO Drone Team and Michigan State Police Motor Carrier Division responded to conduct the crash investigation. The roadway in the area was closed to traffic for several hours to facilitate the crash investigation. This crash remains under investigation by the sheriff's office and any witnesses who have not already talked to deputies are encouraged to call the Ottawa County Central Dispatch at 1-800-249-0911.
