Mass-casualty simulated drill set for Wednesday night in Ottawa Co.

GRAND HAVEN TOWNSHIP, Mich. -- Public safety crews in Ottawa County will conduct a mass-casualty exercise Wednesday night at Harvest Church in Grand Haven Township.

The church will be closed to the public at 3 p.m. for set up. The drill will run from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Ottawa County Emergency Management Director Lou Hunt says the simulation will test coordination and efficiency among first responders and medical professionals. The area will not be open to the public during the drill.

Here is more information from an Ottawa County Emergency Management news release:

Local hospitals will also be participating in the exercise during this time by receiving communication from the scene and then will exercise medical surge at a later date. The exercise is co-hosted by the Grand Haven Twp. Fire Department, The City of Grand Haven Department of Public Safety, Ottawa County Emergency Management, and the Ottawa Medical Control Board Authority.

“The purpose of the exercise is to develop the best capability in Ottawa County possible for responding to large-scale mass casualty incidents,” said Lou Hunt, Ottawa County Emergency Management Director. “We are already confident in our first responders and medical professionals in Ottawa; they all know their jobs well, but this exercise tests coordination and efficiency across the disciplines as they work together." Hunt said the simulation itself will be an important exercise, but the lessons learned from the day will be invaluable for future training. “Our best measurement of success will be a comprehensive after-action report that identifies where we need to grow, and we will then make the necessary changes,” Hunt said.
