Ottawa Co elections website experiences glitch but otherwise smooth process

WEST MICHIGAN - [WOOD Radio] - Ottawa County Clerk and Register of Deeds Justin Roebuck says a glitch in the elections website there did not impact the tabulation of results from Tuesday's primary election.

"Our count was on the entire night," he told WOOD Radio on West Michigan's Morning News. We obviously had a backup plan ready to go. We had PDF results - they're just not quite as pretty but contain the same information. We had those results up and live on the website within about 10 minutes. But this is, obviously, an issue."

And voter turnout did meet election workers' expectations.

"Overall turnout was pretty much right on the nose in terms of average turnout. It was not an exceptionally high turnout election," Roebuck said. "But it was a smooth election overall. Our election workers did a fantastic job, our local clerks."

There were many absentee ballots submitted in Ottawa County.

"Kind of a high-water mark for absentees in this cycle. But, yeah, we had a good day," Roebuck said.

During the nine-day early voting period, there were 2-thousand-862 ballots cast countywide in Ottawa.

"At this point, a very low number for a new method of voting. We're going to have to see how this looks and how voters decide they want to vote. Obviously, voters have a lot of options right now in terms of casting their ballots; it's a great convenience. But again, we're not seeing a lot of usage."
