GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- There were nine days of early voting in Michigan, but many people are hitting the polls in person today.
The polls will remain open until 8 p.m.
On West Michigan's Morning News, Kent County Clerk and Register of Deeds Lisa Posthumus Lyons pointed out that it is a closed primary. That means you can only vote for candidates representing one party. That is because candidates from the respective parties will be nominated for the general election in November.
"For this election, it is so important to stay in your lane. Because once you pick a party, you've got to stay right down that. Otherwise, your vote will be void," Posthumus Lyons said.
Local clerks ask that you bring photo identification to speed up the voting process.
The U.S. Senate race and congressional races are the prominent ones on the ballot. But Posthumus Lyons told WOOD Radio there are a lot of lower-profile races you can educate yourself about before heading to the voting booth.
"We've got nonpartisan races like judges. And you've got proposals on the ballot," she said. "So, it's really important to just kind of be prepared when you go in to vote. And you can a sample - exactly what's on your ballot. If you're in Kent County, go to KentCountyVotes.com . Throughout the state, go to Michigan.gov/vote .
