KENT COUNTY, Mich. -- The 41st annual National Night Out comes up next Tuesday night, Aug. 6.

It began in the suburbs of Philadelphia and now about 40-million people participate nationally. The community policing event raises awareness about crime-prevention programs.

Several Night Out events will be taking place in Grand Rapids. To celebrate, the city will be offering free admission at all three of its city pools that day. (See attached charts)

Below are more details about the Grand Rapids Night Out and the South Kent Night Out in Gaines Charter Township:

The Parks and Recreation Department will celebrate NNO by offering free admission to all three of its City pools on August 6. Free pool swim will take place:

  • Noon to 5 p.m. – Briggs Park (324 Knapp St. SE)
  • 5 to 8 p.m. – Martin Luther King Park (1200 MLK Jr. St. SE)
  • 5 to 8 p.m. – Richmond Park (963 Richmond St. NW)

“National Night Out is a time when neighbors can get together, meet their police officers, fire fighters and City leadership face-to-face, and learn more about how we can all work together for safer communities,” said Julie Niemchick, GRPD crime prevention coordinator.

One of the region's largest Night Out's will take place in some parking lots outside of South Christian High School in Gaines Township. The Kent County Sheriff's Office hosts it.

Deputy Jason Vander Molen says they will have their drone unit there, plus tactical team vehicle and equipment, the K-9 unit, and the Mounted horse unit. The Michigan State Police are planning to have their dive truck and helicopter there. Local fire departments and businesses will be represented, as well, with free pizza from Peppino's and some TV action figures on scene.
