KENTWOOD (WOOD-AM) - The Federal Emergency Management Agency has denied a request for a major disaster declaration following the May tornadoes that hit Branch, Cass, Kalamazoo and Saint Joseph counties.

Portage will be pursuing an appeal.

"The letter that we received references that local and state sources should be sufficient, but that is far from the truth because people are truly suffering and we truly don't have the resources needed to get everybody back on their feet," City Manager Pat McGinnis told WOOD-TV.

The storm caused injuries and widespread damage, but no deaths were reported.
