Files charged against juvenile accused of shooting teen in face

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- Kent County Prosecutor Chris Becker says his office has filed two charges against a juvenile in connection to a May 21 shooting adjacent to Alger Middle School in southeast Grand Rapids.

A 13-year-old eighth-grade student was shot in the face, but has since recovered.

The shooting in a splash-pad bathroom was accidental, but one count of 'Careless discharge of a firearm causing injury' was issued. The second is larceny of a firearm.

Becker told WOOD Radio the charges will be processed in the Juvenile Court system, because the teenager is too young to be moved into the adult system.

"Given his age, this is a straight juvenile matter," Becker said. "He's too young to even move to the adult court if, for some reason, we wanted to. So, under Michigan law there are certain ages where you can move cases, and this is not one of them."

The two juveniles were playing when the gun went off. The person who shot it ran for help.

"So, hopefully he'll get the help he needs to get this behavior corrected so we don't see him in the adult (court) system down the road," Becker said.
