U.S. Rep. Bill Huizenga says failed Trump assassination attempt unified GOP

MILWAUKEE, Wisc. -- It has been a rousing week for the Grand Old Party, with former President Donald Trump surviving last Saturday's assassination attempt and then being nominated for president at the Republican National Convention.

Fourth District Congressman Bill Huizenga is in Milwaukee this week. He said on West Michigan's Morning News that a Trump presidency would result in a better economy for people in West Michigan.

"There's just a clear path forward in a very turbulent world right now economically," Huizenga said. "So, as we have job security that is significant. The other side is physical security. And it's everything from the border to, I think, just setting the tone differently than what we have seen."

Huizenga said the assassination attempt on Trump at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, helped unify the Republican Party. He noted that former United Nations Ambassador and ex-South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley even gave a speech at the convention this week.

"Sadly, I'm not sure that if Saturday had not happened that Nikki Haley would be here," Huizenga said, referring to a feud she had with Trump while she was running for the Republican nomination.

Huizenga figures last Saturday's shooting of Trump was a wake-up call for the party.

"That, I think, has sort of brought in home for many people to say, 'Okay, we need to come together as Republicans.' Because we understand - and frankly, everybody knows - (President) Joe Biden hasn't had a good couple of weeks," Huizenga said.
