GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- Grand Rapids Police have released photographs and video of who they say should be key witnesses in the murder of Lakyijah Williams.
The 15-year-old was gunned down on May 18 in downtown Grand Rapids while riding a scooter. It happened in the 100 block of Ottawa Avenue SW, just south of Van Andel Arena.
Investigators gathered surveillance video from nearby businesses in an effort to identify a suspect. Police Chief Eric Winstrom is asking the witnesses to come forward with information. He says they are likely juveniles and are not suspects.
“These witnesses are likely juveniles themselves,” said Winstrom. “I would ask their parents to put themselves in Lakyijah’s family’s shoes. Help us to bring justice for Lakyijah and her family by making sure we are able to interview these witnesses.”
The Kent County Medical Examiner ruled the cause of death was homicide by shooting.
