Bishop to ordain Deacon Baker into priesthood on Saturday at St. Andrew's

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- Bishop David Walkowiak will ordain Deacon Nicholas Baker to the priesthood on Saturday.

The Catholic Diocese of Grand Rapids tells us the Mass with Rite of Ordination will be held at 10 a.m. at the Cathedral of Saint Andrew. That is at 301 Sheldon Boulevard, near Division Avenue. The Mass is open to the public. You also can watch it on the GRdiocese.org website or the diocese's YouTube channel.

Father Nick is a member of St. Sebastian Parish in Byron Center, and credits Monsignor William Duncan with fostering his vocation.

According to a Diocese news release, Baker, 27, s the son of Todd and Lisa Baker, and has two siblings: Kurtis and Morgan. He graduated from Byron Center High School and the University of Saint Thomas in Saint Paul, Minnesota, where he received a bachelor’s degree in 2020.

Father Nick was ordained a transitional deacon on May 20, 2023. He received his Master of Divinity from the University of Saint Mary of the Lake/Mundelein Seminary in Mundelein, Illinois, in spring 2024. He completed his pastoral internship at Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Parish in Belmont under the mentorship of Father Tony Pelak.

Father Nick is a member of St. Sebastian Parish in Byron Center, and will become assistant pastor of Holy Spirit Parish on July 1st.

Baker will celebrate his Mass of Thanksgiving on June 2 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Sebastian Church, 9408 Wilson Ave. SW, Byron Center.

Father Nick has been appointed assistant pastor of Holy Spirit Parish in Grand Rapids, effective July 1.
