Southbound US-131 reopens at Hall Street as holiday travel cranks up

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- Southbound US-131 has reopened at Hall Street in Grand Rapids, a few days ahead of schedule.

The Michigan Department of Transportation has been doing maintenance work on the freeway bridges that cross over Plaster Creek between Burton and 28th streets since early April. The northbound work was completed at the end of last month, and the southbound work began after that.

M-DOT spokesman John Richard tells WOOD Radio the exit and entrance ramps will remain closed for a while as crews remove temporary pavement markings and equipment.

"There are still ramp and lane closures on southbound (US-131). There's double-lane closures all the way from Ann Street to Hall," Richard said.

That stretch of US-131 between 28th Street and Burton Street was built in the early 1960s, and some repairs needed to be done, in addition to the maintenance work.

"To fix those (concrete) joints of the original pavement on 131, and the whole stretch from 28th Street through downtown Grand Rapids," Richard said.

A separate project has been underway this month on northbound US-131 (technically, I-296 on that stretch of freeway) at the ramps to I-96 and M-37. Richard said that project will continue until late September. Detour signs are in place.
