New law will protect milkweed in the state of Michigan

A new law passed in March will protect milkweed and ban noxious weeds in the state of Michigan.

House Bill 4857 was signed into law on March 12th, and clarifies what plants are considered noxious weeds, such as ragweed and poison ivy, while making the distinction that milkweed is not within that classification.

Doing so helps to not only protect milkweed, but the animals that depends on it for survival, such as the monarch butterfly. Milkweed is the only plant monarch caterpillars are able to eat and that monarch butterflies can lay their eggs upon.
