30-year-old Keyante Newbern, accused of shooting and killing a Grand Rapids woman through a closed door back in 2022, has been found guilty of first-degree murder in a Kent County jury trial that got underway just this week.
Newbern had fired through a closed door the day after Christmas back in 2022, killing Miya Kelly, the mother of two children ages 1 and 3, who were with her when the shot pierced her front door.
The children were not injured.
A Kent County jury found Newbern guilty of first-degree murder and firearms violations this morning. Deliberations got underway yesterday afternoon. Newbern now faces a mandatory sentence of life in prison when he returns to court for sentencing.
