All GRPS schools to close Tuesday due to city's Boil Water Advisory

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- The Grand Rapids Public Schools district has canceled classes for Tuesday due to the Boil Water Advisory in northeast Grand Rapids.

Superintendent Dr. Leadriane Roby said in a statement released by the district that the situation has had a huge impact on school operations districtwide. She adds that a decision about whether classes will be held Wednesday will be announced by the close of business on Tuesday.

“The boil water advisory has had a huge impact on school operations districtwide so we have decided to close all schools on Tuesday so that we can address this matter,” GRPS Superintendent Dr. Leadriane Roby said. “Cancelling school for any reason is always a challenging decision. The health, safety, and well-being of our scholars must be at the forefront of our planning.”

The district's Facilities & Operations team will visit each of the impacted buildings to flush the water systems, and bottled water will be made available once classes resume.

The city said it planned to begin testing the municipal water Monday and, if tests clear after 48 hours, the city will have state authorization to lift the Boil Water Advisory at that time.

In a matter unrelated to the school district ... Homeless shelter Degage Ministries is seeking water donations to provide to its patrons. Anyone wishing to donate can bring water to the main entrance, 139 Sheldon Avenue. That is at the corner of Sheldon Avenue and Cherry street in downtown Grand Rapids.
