GRPD identifies victim of fatal hit-and-run crash

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- The Grand Rapids Police have identified the victim of a fatal hit-and-run crash as Roberto Delgato.

They say the 53-year-old was hit by a dark-colored Honda Pilot with a model year between 2006 and 2008.

We've attached to this story still images taken from surveillance cameras.

Delgato was found by a motorist lying on South Division Avenue near Andre Street, a couple blocks south of Burton Street, around 3:15 a.m. on March 10. Police said he was likely struck by a northbound vehicle, which left the scene. Life saving measures were attempted, but Delgato was declared dead at the scene.

The crash remains under investigation by the GRPD Traffic Unit.

According to a GRPD news release:

  • There will be significant damage to the driver’s side headlight (the headlight itself and the area surrounding it) and very likely, damage to the hood on the driver’s side. It is also likely the windshield is cracked.

  • The vehicle fled the scene going north on Division, and then turned east onto Burton. Video suggests the vehicle may have turned north onto Francis Ave SE.

“We are asking anyone who may have information about this fatal crash to contact GRPD or provide tips anonymously through Silent Observer,” said Officer Alex Thompson, the lead investigator. “We also encourage businesses or residents in the area of Burton and Francis to check any available surveillance camera footage to help us determine where the suspect vehicle may have traveled as it left the scene. We will follow every possible lead to hold this driver accountable and seek justice for Mr. Delgato.”
