Police: Suspect in Barryton bludgeoning now in custody

MECOSTA COUNTY, Mich. -- The Mecosta County Sheriff's Office says the teenage suspect in the killing of a 41-year-old Fork Township man this week spent the last year in an out-of-state custody program.

Detectives say they've arrested the 16-year-old boy on a felony homicide warrant. That, after Richard Simko was found shot and bludgeoned Wednesday morning in his Barryton Township home.

That is on Truman Road near 50th Avenue. Police are looking into a possible motive.

Undersheriff Casey Nemeth added this in a news release:

"The juvenile male, a ward of Osceola County Probate Court at the time of the murder, spent the last year out-of-state in a custody program for crimes committed as a juvenile in Osceola County in 2022-23. He remains in custody on the Murder Warrant and awaits arraignment in court.

All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law."
