Suspect in gunfire exchange with GRPD officers arraigned on 5 charges

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- A judge read five felony counts Thursday afternoon against the 18-year-old suspect in last weekend's gunfire exchange with Grand Rapids Police.

Saul Rodriguez allegedly jumped out of a car after a traffic stop last weekend on Division Avenue, took off running and opened fired at two police officers in an alley near Burton Street and Horton Avenue. They returned fire and were placed on standard administrative leave during the subsequent police investigation. There were no reported injuries.

WOOD-TV reported on court documents regarding a message that Rodriguez later allegedly sent to his girlfriend, telling her he was going to be charged with attempted murder. And that is what happened Thursday afternoon. He was hit with two counts of assault with intent to murder, one count of carrying a concealed weapon and two counts of using a firearm in the commission of a felony.

Those charges are separate from Rodriguez's arraignment yesterday in connection to a January carjacking and assault with a dangerous weapon.
