Davenport University announces first-of-its-kind online bilingual program

CALEDONIA TOWNSHIP, Mich. -- Davenport University is poised to launch some new online bilingual programs that university officials say are unique in the United States.

A news conference was held this morning on Davenport's W.A. Lettinga Campus in Caledonia Township.

The 12 online programs will begin in the Fall of 2024, as part of the Casa Latina initiative. It is a relatively new approach to higher education that incorporates dual-language methodologies across its curriculum. The goal is to bridge the talent gap between English and Spanish fluency to help students be able to access high-demand careers.

"Most of the programs are in the (Davenport) College of Business," Carlos Sanchez said. He is the Casa Latina executive director. "We have a bachelor's in Business, marketing/H.R. management. We have also one in the College of Urban Education that is centered on STEM education."

Sanchez was asked what is prompting the launch of the online programs.

"We are adapting, really, to how the Latino community is learning right now. Latinos who speak English and Spanish, and sometime also 'Spanglish.' So, that is why we are teaching this course in English and Spanish at the same time," Sanchez said. "So more Latinos can have access to a Bachelor's or a Master's degree."
