The Grand River Bands of Ottawa Indians is still seeking federal recognition.
While the bands have been recognized by the State of Michigan, they are awaiting that status from the federal government. The federal recognition would pave the way for funding to access various resources, and the ability to exercise sovereign treaty rights.
In response, the tribe has sent them a 148-page long response, in hopes that the added information will make the 'comprehensive and indisputable' case they need to finally gain federal recognition.
The Grand River Bands of Ottawa Indians first applied for recognition back in 1994.
