KCSO: Couple arrested on unlawful-imprisonment and child-abuse charges

CEDAR SPRINGS, Mich. -- Kent County Prosecutor Chris Becker says his office has filed child abuse and unlawful-imprisonment charges against two people.

"We have charged Michael Rus and Jessica Kilgore with one count of unlawful imprisonment, and one count of child abuse 2nd, each," Becker wrote in a news release. "These are felony charges; unlawful imprisonment punishable by a maximum 15 years and/or $20,000 and child abuse punishable by a maximum 10 years (in prison."

Kent County Sheriff's detectives say they arrested a 47-year-old man and his 38-year-old girlfriend Wednesday night after doing a welfare check on a seven-year-old boy at a home on South Main Street in Cedar Springs around 9:30. and discovered that he had been locked in a small, makeshift room for extended periods of time.

The Sheriff's Office said the boy was brought to a hospital for an evaluation due to the situation and the condition of the home. At the time this report was published, the father and his girlfriend were scheduled to be formally charged in 63rd District Court.

"These are merely charges at this time, they are both presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in court," Becker said.
