Great Lakes tribes call on President Biden to speak out against Line 5

A coalition of 30 tribal nations across the Great Lakes are calling on President Joe Biden to speak out against Line 5, a pipeline owned by Enbridge, a Canadian energy company, that runs through Michigan and under the Straits of Mackinac, and trespasses on tribal land.

The letter was sent to the White House this week by the Native American Rights Fund, signed by 30 tribes, including all 12 of the federally recognized tribes in Michigan, asking the President to weigh in on the present dilemma.

A federal court ruled last year that Enbridge, a Canadian energy company, is trespassing on land that belongs to the Bad River Band of Lake Superior Chippewa in Wisconsin. They now have until June 2026 to shut down that portion of the Line 5 pipeline.

However, the Bad River Band does not want to wait until 2026 for the shutdown. and Enbridge opposes the shutdown completely. Both parties have now appealed that ruling, with the Bad River Band now looking to garner support from the White House.
