Former West Michigan Congressman Justin Amash announces run for Senate

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- Former Third District Congressman Justin Amash has tossed his hat in the election ring. He announced Thursday that he is going to run for the Michigan U.S. Senate seat that will be opening next year.

Longtime Democratic U.S. Senator Debbie Stabenow is not seeking re-election.

Amash, a 43-year-old Grand Rapids native, served as the Third District congressional representative from 2011 to 2021. In 2019, he announced he would be leaving the Republican party and become an independent. He said at the time that many Americans did not feel well-represented by either of the two major political parties. Amash joined the Libertarian Party the following year and said he would not seek re-election.

Amash launched an exploratory committee in mid-January of this year to consider running for the U.S. Senate seat.

"After his initial election to Congress in 2010’s Republican wave, Amash built a reputation in the district by posting publicly accessible explanations of his votes online and regularly hosting public town halls," his campaign said in a news release.

The Amash campaign website is at https://www.justinamash.com.
