Study says antidepressant use surged among girls during pandemic

A new study from the University of Michigan says antidepressant prescription rates surged among girls and young women during the pandemic.

The study says the rate increased by 130% for 12 to 17-year-olds and 60% faster for 12 to 23-year-olds after March 2020.

Not only that, but Dr. Bibhas Singla, a psychiatrist and medical director at Pine Rest Christian Mental Health Services said clinicians are still seeing the psychological impacts of the pandemic today.

While the reason for the higher rates among girls is not particularly clear yet, it's suspected the cause could be the removal of usual support and life events, as well as less access to care.
