MSP investigates fatal car/pedestrian crash along US-131 in Allegan County

LEIGHTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. -- Michigan State Police say a 72-year-old Grand Rapids woman was fatally struck by a car Thursday night on U.S. 131.

It happened a little before 8 o'clock in the northbound lanes, near 138th Avenue.

Troopers from the MSP Wayland Post say their preliminary investigation revealed that the driver of a white Buick Lacrosse was heading north when it hit the woman in the travel lane. Troopers say she had pulled her car over onto the shoulder of the freeway after one of its tires became "disabled." She then got out of her car and was struck by the Buick.

Police say the driver of that car, a 44-year-old Kalamazoo man, was wearing a seatbelt at the time. He was not hurt.

MSP is waiting to learn whether drugs or alcohol were a factor in the crash. The investigation is still underway.

Troopers were assisted by the Allegan County Sheriff’s Department, Wayland Police Department, Wayland and Dorr Township fire departments and Wayland Area EMS.
