Kids & Family Expo to promote mental health through physical activities

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- A family-focused community event this Saturday at DeVos Place will promote mental health through interactive, educational and physical activities.

The Kids & Family Expo runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. It will include an Empowerment Stage presented by Forest View Hospital and featuring fun activities and education.

"All day long, there will be events of empowerment on the stage," Christy Buck said on West Michigan's Morning News. She is executive director of the Mental Health Foundation of West Michigan, also known as the "Be Nice" nonprofit organization.

"Anywhere from people who are empowering themselves. From a juggler on the stage ... along with books being read, to kids related to the Be Nice action plan; where in the book can you hear the action plan of notice, invite, empower " Buck said.

WOOD-TV chief meteorologist Ellen Bacca will talk about the weather experience.

"Weather is so related to our mental health," Buck said. "So, teaching these things in a great, fun way. And so, kids can come over to the stage, along with their parents, learn a little bit more."

There will be a Shenanigans Petting Zoo, inflatables, face painting, Lincoln Logs, a Grand Rapids Police Department cruiser and a cake walk.

Nothing Bundt Cakes will hold five cake walks every hour.

"We'll have a photo booth. In addition, we've got these huge, gigantic play apparatuses. So, the kids are going to have a lot of fun. And all the exhibitors will also be playing games at their booths, too."

General admission tickets are $9. More information is available on the BeNice.org website.
